Let me use a real life story and share my thoughts on what I would have done differently if I was the founder.
1) I remember back in 2023 in Nigeria there was a popping fashion brand called Ashlux. It was so famous across the country that it attracted investment from Dior and collaboration from Tommy Hilfiger. People loved this brand so much that Kanye West wore it during one of his performances in Chicago. That was how big this brand got. Famous across almost 13 countries, getting collaborations from top brands around the world and being recognized as one of the first Black owned fashion brands to reach that level of global exposure.
Then one thing happened that caused its downfall and it has never recovered since.
They called out a popular and highly influential celebrity for wearing a fake version of their brand. They said he was cheap and could not afford the real one and that he should have just asked and they would have sent it to him for free. The problem was that this celebrity chills with people like Drake on a daily basis, has two Grammys to his name and had millions of loyal fans. Calling him out publicly was the biggest mistake they ever made.
His fans immediately started burning the brand's clothes they had already purchased. They called for a full boycott. And within just 24 hours the brand lost almost $3 million because of a problem they created with their own hands.
What made it worse was that they came out immediately trying to explain themselves to angry fans who believed their artist had just been disrespected. They deleted the post and tried to make amends but the damage was already done.
Today Ashlux is completely dead in its country of origin. New brands like ZTT and High Fashion took over the Nigerian market. No Nigerian celebrity wears Ashlux anymore. No hype. No buzz. And around 2024 Dior terminated their contract following the incident.
A $250 million brand destroyed because of one mistake they caused with their own hands.
2) Using the same story, here is what I would have done differently.
First, take a deep breath. Panic is what killed Ashlux. They rushed to explain themselves to angry fans instead of acknowledging the mistake first. What people fail to understand is that acknowledging your mistake first actually makes your apology land better. Everything moves on the rails of energy. When you rush you make more mistakes. When you slow down and handle things properly you end up in a safer place.
If it was me I would have immediately reached out to the artist's management team privately and sorted things out behind closed doors. Even offered a good amount of money to make it right. Do not worry about the money, it will come back later. What you are protecting is your reputation. Get the artist on your side privately then let him issue a statement that calms the chaos publicly. Simple. But most people skip it because pride and panic get in the way.
3) I think it depends entirely on the mood of the community in that moment.
Give yourself all the blame. Own it completely. Give the community the right to pour their anger out for at least 30 minutes before asking for a live AMA to address things directly. Physical and live communication helps more than just responding through text. People need to see you and feel heard.
And one thing is that when you get in front of them do not try to sound intelligent or clever. The human anger does not respond well to that. Speak like a normal person who made a mistake, who has a solution and who is genuinely listening. Let them see that before you say anything else.
That is the only way to manage the speed of what comes next.
